Modern society talks constantly about talent, ambition and intelligence. But increasingly, the binding constraint is attention.
A surprising number of important ideas came from people who were able to think about one thing for an unusually long time without interruption. Not necessarily geniuses in the cinematic sense. Just people with sustained cognitive endurance. Darwin spent years thinking about barnacles. Keynes rewrote economic theory while moving between government work and long periods of reflection. Most breakthroughs look less like flashes of inspiration and more like extended intellectual stubbornness.This is becoming harder.
The modern economy rewards responsiveness. Messages, feeds, notifications and meetings create an environment where quick reaction is mistaken for intellectual engagement. People feel mentally active all day while rarely reaching real depth. There is a difference between processing information and wrestling with an idea long enough for it to change shape.
The strange thing is that technology made knowledge abundant while making contemplation scarce.
